“Man…. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
-The Dalai Lama, when asked about what surprised him most about humanity.
Here is a question I get asked on a daily basis; “What’s you major.” I tell them I’m a film major and sometimes I get an occasional “oh wow,” but the inevitable “so, what’s your favorite film?” or “what kind of films do you like to make?” always follows.
The best films are the ones that tell stories. I was one told that stories should be both entertaining and meaningful. I feel like far too many films today are either or and are cluttered with “character films” that bore the crap out of everyone and try too hard to be meaningful. They teach the audience nothing and reduce the experience to dull character studies. Time is wasted. Why can’t films teach us about making good choices and be entertained by them at the same time. These are the types of films and stories that will withstand the test of time and continue to be relevant centuries from now, just like the works of William Shakespeare.
These are the types of films I like to write and produce and I wish more filmmakers would chose this route and start to further innovate and explore on how film could communicate their attitudes and messages.
